what if. . .

Frank Gehry designed the new parts of the Laidlaw Biomass plant. Ok, so that won't happen but what if it were well designed/unusual/totally rad and became a tourist destination in itself. Would that make people happy? Also, it should be a cogen plant that is used to heat city buildings and as much of the East side as possible. They have been doing that in Europe for years. Just a thought. Is there money in the stimulus for good design and sharp looking green energy plants?

Middlebury College is psyched to have a biomass boiler/cogen system.

totally minnie madonna

My mom came to visit last weekend and I asked her to bring some stuffed animals for the SE installation. I also asked for the Minnie Mouse doll I begged for in 1987 in at Disney World. My parents gave in the spirit of Disney even though she looked like Madonna. I love her. She's got a purple pleather bra underneath the lace top. I am not sure if she is missing a glove or if she ever only had one.
And this is the trophy I won at the Atlantic States Open Weightlifting Championship. Only adult woman in my weight class. . . but I did school that 13 year old.

How Is This Glass?

Yuka and Anjali are producing a blog and show that focuses on the connection between glass and new media.
A more detailed description:
[Their blog/exhibition] "explores the crossroads of glass and new/alternate media. Instead of using glass to support a primary narrative or decorative aesthetic, these artists explore issues that are intrinsic to the craft medium: the nature of its materiality, transparency, optics, electricity, ductility, and phenomenology. Challenging existing discourse, such “guerilla interventions” form the project’s focus, and the authors will write about such work clearly, critically and creatively."

How is this Glass? Post-Glass Artists and Glass Guerillas was selected as a grantee for the Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers program. :)

asian long horned beetle

Alas, the tattoos are not real but part of an educational promotion to inform the public about the threat of the Asian Long Horned Beetle that takes out maple, birch, and poplar trees. The tattoos were left over from the NH Farm and Forest Expo.

Rick Dipietro Fan Site

I have been trying to contact the NY Islanders to see if they will come to our NY Islands.

I have some calls in and it could work. It would be a unique opportunity--sending hockey players to the art museum.

During my searching, I found this GEM of a site. Rick Dipietro Fan Page

Rickygirl2001 has gotten it right.

Love it. Some one leaves his real number in the guest book so this girl can call him.

1st meet

Here are a few images from the Atlantic States Olympic Weightlifting meet in Lynn MA. I am happy with my performance since it was my first meet and I have only been training for about 4 weeks. I got a sweet t-shirt and it was real scene. I was very impressed with the older folks who lift out of pure love for the sport. My coach, Bud, was happy as a clam and loving every minute of the competition--talking with old friends, telling stories etc.
Snatch-36kg
Clean & Jerk- 45 kg (overall pretty light weight but great for my first time out)

It was clear that most of the competitors were very serious evidenced by the vitamins they took, their strut and matching wind suits.

Everything was new and interesting to me since it was my first meet. I really was taking it all in.
Some highlights:
-I ask about weigh in and Bud says you strip down to your "undies" to weigh at little as possible. A kind lady was in the women's locker room to weigh us in and the woman in front of me was above her weight class by a tiny bit. She asked if she could take off everything. She did. I was thinking to myself, "There is no way a pair of underwear and a bra are going to effect your weight." I was wrong. Total nakedness allowed her to get into the lower weight class. I suppose this option is better than puking.
-An older gentleman who looked like a resident of Boca Vista on Seinfeld, wearing a full sweatsuit, lifted in a bright yellow singlet with pride and chutzpah. It took him an awefully long time to put his sweatpants back on after the lift, he just strode around in his singlet. Awesome.
-An entire family of weightlifters sold Bulgarian specialty weightlifting shoes. The husband coached the wife and the daughter danced and played and warmed up with the mother before she lifted.
-A coach rocked a mullet in a self-aware yet non-ironic way.

This woman is 74.

Lynn Meet

My first Olympic-style lifting meet is in Lynn on Feb 15. Very soon. I posted a Melanie Roach video for inspiration.

Recently at lifting I felt like I might be on an episode of MTV's Made. I have only been training for a short time (about a month) and I have a meet coming up. As on Made, this seems like a fairly unreasonable amount of time to prepare. I have an expert coach who comes up with various drills to do. I have made a new commitment and am following through with it. Last week, I struggled on one lift and felt like I was at the highest point of the narrative when the kid almost gives up. They usually cry but I held it back. I wasn't close to giving up but frustrated that I have some sort of hitch and lift my butt up incorrectly before the lift.

I am not on Made. If I was on Made, they would have to play up the artist angle. It is not interesting to say hockey player wants to be MADE into an Olypmic lifter. So they would shoot footage of me painting, wearing black and glasses and listening to obscure music and talking to myself. In Made, Bud would not only be coaching me in lifting but also how to be less awkward and talk to boys. He would instruct me to wear a wrestling singlet to school in order to embarass me but also to prove my commitment to lifting. In the middle, I would tell him I don't need him, but know that I do since I know nothing about the physics of lifting. At the meet, everyone would know something was up since there are legit cameras that Lynn YMCA and the judges would feel pressure to give me a lift that I didn't really get. In the end, it would be suspensful, but I would get third or something where I atleast got a trophy. That's if I were on Made.

meghan o. mahoney preachin'

A bit late to post this but it is great!

MEGHAN O. MAHONEY
“All the Sports World’s a Stage and All the Athletes MORE than Merely Players!”

Meghan Mahoney serves as manager of operations at Sport in Society–a Northeastern University Center–where she is responsible for ensuring productive, efficient internal activities and external advocacy. Previously, she spent a year researching the international development of women’s ice hockey in Denmark, New Zealand & South Africa. Meghan was a four-year varsity ice hockey player and team captain at the College of the Holy Cross, where she graduated in 2005.

Paraphrasing Shakespeare, she observes that sport is perhaps a more closely watched and revered stage than any other. As pure an escape as the general audience wishes sport to be, athletes are intrinsically connected to the larger world in both their daily lives and their place on this great stage. What happens when athletes not only recognize this connection, but use their positions to draw attention to the stark realities that exist within sport and in the greater community? What would it take for tonight’s winning quarterback, say, to use his spotlight to speak up for human rights? What is his responsibility to do so, and how would we react if he did?
