Emma Bee Bernstein 1985-2008
Reposted from Jeanne Jo
Emma Bee Bernstein was the daughter of Susan Bee and Charles Bernstein. Rachelle and I had the pleasure of meeting with Emma, and her friend and collaborator Nona Willis-Aronowitz, last September. Emma had an amazing presence; she was almost vibrating with intense energy and intelligence. We talked about feminism, tattoos, and grad school. Her passing is a terrible shock. Our hearts go out to her loved ones in this time of tragic loss.
Jeanne and I sought out Emma and Nona after learning of their project from Maria Buszek and Joanna Frueh. Our meeting gave me a sense of this great connection between us. All interested in the same things and all looking towards each other for inspiration and support but also quesetioning and challenging each other. Emma certainly inspired me after that meeting.

cookies
As per my own holiday tradition, I spent a day manically making cookies. This first began when I was in college and returned home still in finals mode and was bored out of my mind in Berlin. It is still fun even though I am generally less bored.
We have- Chocolate Chip cookies, Do-dos, Double Chip Tassies, Italian Brownies, and Pizzelles.
depression-style christmas
That means Mon Oncle Steve and Ma Tante Rachelle are making Christmas presents this year.
Inspired by Lily we made stuffed animals from our nieces and nephew's drawings.
Jack age 5:
Monster/Lizard

Emma age 8:
Robot like the one from Wall-E

Anna age 6:
Saber Tooth Tiger (We've taken to calling this one "Crazy Cat.")

Elizabeth age 2 1/2:
Purple Horse

postal apology
A Christmas card from my aunt arrived without the back of the envelope just the thin and tattered front half in the plastic bag pictured below.
The bag made me feel better. They care about me and, as it points out, they handle 2 million pieces of mail a day so sometimes they make mistakes (both human and machine.) Sometimes back of your mail gets ripped off.

wavy grains
Let me paraphrase from an email recently received from someone I call Wavy Grains:
"Is that you real hair? It looks permed.
We will be slow roasting a deer leg over hot coals in Dec. at the Hippie Shack. We would love for you to join us. If Rachelle is still a veggie there will be things there for her too."
You get the drift.
